Since I don't have TiVo yet (am I the last one on the planet?), I still catch commercials. Some of them make me hate the advertiser with a loathing beyond that I have for slime-covered cockroaches (I'm looking at you, deBeers for that stupid "I love this man" commercial, said only after she gets the diamond.) But the Miller Lite commercials with the "good call" angle crack me up. (If you follow that link, click on TV ads at the top navigation bar and you can view them in Quicktime.)
Yes, sometimes it takes very little to entertain me.
Posted by toni at October 25, 2004 10:49 PMIt might sound strange, but most of the times are the ads the most interesting things I see on TV.
Posted by: Priapo at October 26, 2004 06:54 AMi think the widespread use of tivo is an urban myth - i know of no actual person that uses it.
Posted by: c'lam at October 26, 2004 08:39 AMNo, you're not the last one on the planet without TiVo... Sadly, I don't have it either. And YES, I HATE that deBeers commercial, too!! It's soo annoying and aggravating!!
Posted by: rin at October 26, 2004 11:51 AMAnd the the Lord God gave me Tivo... He just left at the Best Buy store for me to buy.
Posted by: Corey at October 26, 2004 01:28 PMI don't have TIVO and I don't know anyone who does (is the UK some sort of backwater in this regard perhaps?)
We do however have sky plus - a digital sattelite service that does basically the same thing... lets you pause and rewind live TV, that kind of thing. I don't have it (I use a VHS still for recording, and a DVD for everything else - when my DVD dies I will get DVD-R) but it seems to be taking off.
And *some* adverts are interesting, the rest just annoying... but they do give you time to go and have a pee and make a cup of tea in the middle of "Deadwood"
Posted by: swisstoni at October 26, 2004 05:15 PMI didn't link to the Miller ad but I have this to say about Debeers.......Who the hell is that woman talking to when she says she loves the guy? God? The world? The ad viewing public????? Who wouldn't love a guy that gave you a doorknob sized diamond or a strand of diamonds? Huh? Who?
That commercial drives me insane. I am glad to know there are others out there that hate the whispering woman too!!
Okay, one, I don't have TiVo. It's on my list of techie things to buy when I'm done with school. Two, it's sappy and romantic, but I think the guy is neat in that DeBeer's commercial (he makes a fool of himself all in the name of love, that can't be so wrong can it?), yet I'm with you, I hate the woman. Also, for the most part, by and large, I hate the DeBeer's commercials as a whole. "What is two months salary worth to you?" When indicating that is the budget you should have when buying a diamond engagement ring. Hell, back when I got engaged to my husband, 2 months salary was barely enough to buy his books for college! We got married before I got my engagement ring. Worse yet, he thought that since we were married, he was off the hook for buying me an engagment ring!
Yes I finally got the ring.......2 years AFTER we were married.
I guess I just hate commercials like the DeBeers one because they make you feel worthless if you don't "fit in" and have what they say you should have, because afterall you'll be deemed a failure by your neighbors, friends and co-workers. Well the ring I wear makes no difference because I consider myself quite lucky to have the man I do, let alone the ring.
*shuts up and goes and sits in the corner to stop hyperventilating*
I get so worked up.
Posted by: Shannon at October 27, 2004 02:39 PMHave you seen the ad for the Honda Pilot, where the guy is camping and sees the chipmunks or whatever they are popping out of the ground, then he flashes to his coworkers popping their heads above the cubicles, saying "do you smell food?" My husband thinks that's hysterical and--one of the many perks of TiVo--rewinds it over and over when it airs.
I loves me my TiVo something fierce. Believe the hype. I can't imagine TV without it (and I do admit to being just lowbrow enough to love TV).
Posted by: Toni at October 27, 2004 09:58 PMI forgot to add that I want to punch the woman in that DeBeers ad, too.
Posted by: Toni at October 27, 2004 10:03 PMI hadn't seen that one, Toni -- I'll have to be on the lookout for it.
You know, we should all write to deBeers and tell them how much we want to punch that woman. (grin)
Posted by: toni at October 27, 2004 10:15 PMMaybe we could be even MORE proactive and invent a desktop speedbag in the image of her face. When she whispers, "I love this man," you punch her to shut her up. Clearly I have issues with aggression.
Posted by: Toni at October 28, 2004 12:13 PMI hate that commercial too. I think the best one I've seen in a long time is the Juicy Fruit commercial for those new chew things they had out. The one with the pinata at the kid's birthday party that comes alive and starts head-butting the kids. When those kids started screaming the first time I saw it I literally started crying. It was great. *sigh* Too bad 95% of commercials are crappy.
Posted by: Loki's Concubine at October 28, 2004 07:49 PMOkay, getting back to the Honda Pilot commercial (which I do like, as I have lived in cubicleland and was known at a past job as "food whore"--jokingly, really), isn't the wife played by the same actress who was "Emily" on 90210 years and years ago? She had shorter, very blonde hair then, but I swear it's her.
