Katrina, comprehensive report from New Orleans Mayor

Mayor Nagin of New Orleans was briefed late this evening by FEMA and others as to the extent of the damage in and around New Orleans. There is only brief mention of a few of the outlying areas, and the news sounds very grim. Here's the video feed of his discussion of the state of the catastrophe with the anchors at WWL News out of New Orleans.

This absolutely breaks my heart to hear this.

Toni, you probably already know this, but last night Sam and I were listening to WLL (or is it WWL, I get confused) and heard the President of Jefferson Parish announcing that martial law has been declared, the parish is totally shut down -- national guard and state police on all roads to stop people from returning -- nobody can enter until 6 a.m. next Monday, and even then there will be no electricity, no ability to flush toilets. He's hoping during the next week to open up major E/W or N/S roads, but the side streets will still all be blocked with downed trees and debris. He advises people who come back at that time to get what they can out of their homes and leave, because they will have no services and no emergency support, and no safe water to drink, etc., etc.

He's thinking it will be a month or longer before electricity is restored, and weeks before people can safely go home to stay.

An entire PARISH.

I don't think I should read any more articles about this. And especially not see any photos.

I remember one time as a teen my mother and I were at the store and saw this person walking across the parking lot with some sort of physical malady (can't remember now what was wrong with the person) and my mom muttered something which I couldn't make out. I asked her to repeat it and right now this is all I can think of with regard to you and everyone down your way....

"There but for the grace of God go I"

Until this happened to you, I honestly and truly didn't understand nor could appreciate what that meant.

Many hugs and much love go your way.
